Hand cream tube packaging: sizes, materials & MOQ

The price of a hand cream tube depends on much more than its capacity. Two 50 ml tubes may have very different costs because of their material structure, diameter, closure, decoration, color, wall thickness, and order quantity.

Buyers who focus only on the quoted unit price may overlook setup fees, testing costs, packing requirements, freight volume, and filling-line adjustments.

A complete sourcing plan should connect the tube specification with the expected sales volume and total landed cost.

How Size Affects Cost

Capacity influences the amount of material used, but diameter and length also affect production and transport efficiency.

A narrow 50 ml tube may require more length, while a wider tube can hold the same volume in a shorter body. The wider package may use a larger cap and occupy more space in each shipping carton.

Standard diameters are normally more economical because manufacturers already have suitable heading and cap molds. An unusual diameter or shoulder shape may require custom tooling.

Buyers should ask for tube drawings, carton dimensions, units per carton, and total shipment volume before selecting the final size.

Comparing Tube Materials

Single-layer PE is commonly used for stable hand cream formulas. It is flexible, lightweight, and relatively economical.

Multi-layer PE can include additional barrier materials or recycled content. PBL provides improved barrier performance while retaining a smooth cosmetic appearance.

ABL uses aluminum foil and offers strong protection against oxygen, light, and moisture. It may cost more and is more difficult to recycle in many local systems.

The least expensive material is not always the most economical choice. A sensitive formula placed in insufficient packaging may experience fragrance loss, discoloration, or reduced shelf life.

Closure Costs

Standard screw caps and flip-top caps are usually more affordable than custom closures.

Flip-top designs include a hinge and internal sealing features, which can affect the mold and assembly cost. Larger caps use more material and increase shipping volume.

Custom colors may have their own MOQ. A manufacturer might accept a moderate tube quantity while requiring more caps to complete a custom color production run.

Buyers should confirm whether the quotation includes the closure, cap assembly, color matching, and protective packing.

Decoration Pricing

A plain tube with a label is often suitable for pilot launches or small private-label runs.

Direct printing creates a more integrated appearance but involves setup costs. Offset printing is efficient for multi-color graphics, while silk-screen printing provides stronger opacity.

Hot stamping, soft-touch coatings, metallic finishes, gradient spraying, and spot varnishes add production stages. Each additional process increases both cost and the possibility of defects.

Complex decoration may also require individual bags or dividers to prevent scratching during transport.

How MOQ Is Calculated

MOQ is based on production efficiency rather than packaging capacity alone.

The manufacturer must prepare resin or laminate, match colors, install printing plates, configure equipment, and inspect the production run.

A standard white tube with an existing cap may have a lower MOQ than a custom-colored tube with two printing methods and a metallic closure.

MOQ may be calculated separately for:

  • Each tube color
  • Each cap color
  • Each artwork
  • Each capacity
  • Each finish
  • Each packaging structure

When comparingASME hand cream tubeswith other options, buyers should use the same written specification. Otherwise, one quotation may include standard PE and basic printing while another includes a barrier tube and premium finish.

Sample and Setup Costs

Standard samples may be free or available for the cost of shipping. Custom-colored or decorated samples usually require additional preparation.

Possible setup fees include printing plates, silk screens, color matching, custom molds, and special fixtures.

Buyers should ask which charges are one-time expenses and which will apply again when artwork or colors change.

Pre-production samples should be approved in writing before the full run begins.

Filling and Testing Expenses

The tube must work with the actual cream and filling line.

Testing may include compatibility, leakage, aging, drop, compression, and transport simulation. The contract filler may also charge for a pilot run or machine changeover when the diameter changes.

These costs should be included in the packaging budget rather than treated as unexpected launch expenses.

Freight and Inventory Planning

Hand cream tubes are lightweight but occupy considerable space because they are shipped empty.

A low factory price can be offset by high airfreight charges. Sea freight is more economical for larger orders but requires longer planning.

Ordering more units can reduce the packaging price, but excess inventory creates storage costs and risks becoming unusable after an artwork or regulatory change.

The most effective order quantity balances unit cost with realistic sales forecasts. Buyers who compare the full specification, landed cost, and inventory risk can make better packaging decisions than those who select the lowest initial quotation.
